Preparing for a Virtual KonMari® Session

The KonMari® Method is an introspective, mindful and comprehensive assessment of your belongings, and through it, an assessment of your priorities and your life, with the goal of living a more joyful and fulfilling life. Before starting this life changing process, consider (re)reading or listening to Marie Kondo's books or watching her Netflix shows Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo.

  • Think about why you want to tidy and your ideal home and lifestyle. Knowing your 'why' is crucial to staying motivated. Below are some questions to get you thinking.

    • What is motivating you to tidy up?

    • What do you want your space to look like?

    • How do you want to live in and use your space?

    • What are some of the items or activities at home that spark the most joy for you?

    • How do you want to feel as you go about your day to day activities?

  •  Write down your thoughts. The more specific you can get with details the better. You can jot down bullet points, use a narrative format or even draw, or create a vision board.

Gathering Supplies:

  •  a pen and paper for taking notes, and  post-its or masking tape for writing temporary labels.

  • a few large trash bags or cartons for items that will be donated/discarded.

  • Save containers or boxes  like shoeboxes, electronic device boxes, anything that sparks joy that may be useful for storing items.

Preparing your devices.

  • make sure to charge your laptop, phone or tablet so that you are not tied to an outlet during the session.

  • We will be taking a virtual tour of your space at the start of our first session, and many people find that a phone or tablet is more convenient for this.

Preparing your space & belongings

  • We may be looking deep into closets and drawers during the tour, so please set aside anything that is private or valuable that you do not want to be seen.

  • If we will be reviewing clothing during a session, it can be helpful to do laundry beforehand, but if you can't, that's okay.

  • If we will be reviewing papers, I will provide general recommendations on paper management. Follow your advisor's/accountant's/attorney's advice on important documents.

Pacing ourselves

  • We will be meeting for an extended period of time, so quick breaks during the session are recommended.

At our first KonMari session we will :

  • Greet the house to express gratitude before getting started.

  • After that, we will  discuss your vision for your ideal home and lifestyle. This  gives us something to work towards, and can be a tool in aiding the decision making process if we get stuck.

  • Next, we will take a virtual tour of your home, especially any storage areas.

  • Then, we will begin! We will gather your belongings (not your family's), focusing on one category at a time (the KonMari® order is Clothing > Books > Papers > Komono/miscellaneous  > Sentimental). We will sort into manageable sub-categories, so that you can choose the items that bring you joy without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Once you have curated your joy sparking items we will store them efficiently and sustainably, keeping in mind that other storage solutions may come up as you continue to declutter and clear space in other areas of your home. All storage is considered temporary during the decluttering process.
