Can Gifted and Inherited Items be Clutter?

ree

Yes, gifted and inherited items can become clutter if you derive no joy from them, have no use for them, and/or don't even look at them ever. When I say 'find joy' I don't necessarily mean 'jumping for joy' kind of joy. Joy can have several shades. First, of course, is the sheer sense of delight that makes you smile and feels up lifting. Joy can also be a special memory, a feeling of comfort or a little tug at your heartstrings that sentimental objects may evoke.

We often keep these items out of guilt, not wanting to hurt the sentiments of the gift giver, a sense of duty and the notion of dishonoring the memory of the ones who have passed away if we let go.

The purpose of a gift is to be given and to be received. Once that is done, it has served its purpose. As for inherited items, not every item is going to spark joy for you and maybe not any. Does the object really have a place in your home or your heart?

Shake off the guilt! It's ok to let go of gifted and inherited items if they do not spark joy and feel more like a burden. Better to be honest and let them go with gratitude and dignity than to keep them tucked away somewhere, unloved and often unused/forgotten, yet occupying space.

Sincerely,

Meera
