Declutter and organize your entryway closet to create flow, prevent clutter from spilling into nearby spaces, and support a calm entry into your home while making heading out equally stress free and efficient. Entryway closets work best when they serve one clear purpose: hold 'heading-out' essentials. When they start acting as catch-all storage, they quickly become overcrowded and lose functionality.
The 5 top entryway closet mistakes to avoid
Using flimsy hangers: Invest in sturdy, uniform hangers for both form and function. Flimsy plastic hangers, or the metal hangers that you get from the cleaners are not ideal for heavy duty items.
Not using vertical space effectively: Add hooks, drop-down hangers, or stackable bins to maximize storage.
Installing shelves that obstruct hanging space: Shelves are helpful, but only if they don’t interfere with coat storage.
Keeping contents static: Plan a quarterly review and seasonal reset to swap out bulky coats or boots in the summer. You don’t need to have everything out all year round. The hall closet should be a dynamic space whose main purpose is to make the process of heading out stress free and efficient, based on changing needs and priorities throughout the year.
Overstuffing: A hall closet should be no more than 80% full to allow for airflow and easy access.
Tips for decluttering the entryway closet:
Toss or donate items that have outgrown their purpose, no longer fit, are outdated, or in disrepair. Entryway closets should not store vacuum cleaners, cleaning supplies, plastic bags, sports equipment, or bulky backpacks—these belong elsewhere. 'Just in case' items like umbrellas can be relocated to another entry point, such as the garage.
Tips for organizing the entryway closet:
Use the back of the door for lightweight items or accessories.
Designate two favorite coats or shoes per person for daily use.
Label bins for gloves, hats, and scarves. Fold or roll scarves sushi-style to save space.
Use the top shelf for off-season storage.
Leave room for movement and airflow.
Tips for maintaining a tidy and organized entryway closet:
Be clear about your closet’s purpose and function. Visualize your ideal outcome - an intentional, airy space that makes leaving home effortless. The real key to maintaining order isn’t just easy access to essentials - it’s the ease of putting them back after use! When you make that process simple by avoiding overstuffing, setting clear rules, and using visual cues, tidiness becomes second nature.
